Panther (continental heraldry)

Heraldry symbol

The Continental Panther, also known as the German panther, Styrian Panther, Carantanian panther or simply, Black Panther or Panther is a quadrupedal creature found in heraldry. It is depicted as creature with a head similar to a horse or bull, the body of a wingless griffin or typical panther incensed (but without the spots) and occasionally, horns and sharp teeth. However, it may also be described as a donkey, a composite creature with a horned head, long neck and a horse's body, or as a creature with 4 horns, cow ears and fiery red tongue. all of these forms were the results of either cultural influence or lack of understanding in what an actual panther looked like. It is often seen capable of expelling fire through its mouth and ears (which is meant to represent the sweet odor they give off), much like most panther incensed depicted in heraldry. It is possible that this creature could have been a precursor to the Keythong.
