The papiones (other names: Papilia, Papilio, Papio, or Papionib) appears in some medieval encyclopedias. It is described as being a little larger than the fox, with a hairy skin. They gather together to feed on dead animals, and also enter graves to eat human corpses. When one starts to howl, the others join in, sounding like wolves.
