Yūrei refer to creatures that are analogous to western ghosts within Japanese mythology. They appear with pale looking skin, long disheveled dark hair and white burial kimonos. Some may also appear with bloody wounds as an indication of their death. Reikons (spirits or souls) can turn into Yūrei if they remain stuck in purgatory as a result of inability for proper funeral rites, having grudge and malice in their hearts before they died or sudden, tragic or violent deaths.
