The Wolof people of western Africa believe in fairy-type creatures known as yumboes. Yumboes are not fairies, however, but are instead believed to be the spirits of departed humans. Yumboes are about two feet tall with pearly white skin that is said to glow in the moonlight. The yumboes dance and feast in the moonlight, and if a human comes across the celebration, they may be invited to join in the festivities. Food and drink is said to be served by invisible servants whose hands and feet are all that are visible. The yumboes are benevolent and wish no harm upon humans.
